Heather Leslie is an assistant professor of environmental studies and biology at Brown University. She studies coastal ecosystems and how connections among people and other elements of the ecosystem influence both ecosystem health and human well-being. Dr. Leslie leads an international interdisciplinary research team focused on small-scale fisheries in Mexico’s Gulf of California. The research approaches and findings she is developing in Mexico are applicable to other ecological and institutional contexts, including the United States. Dr. Leslie and her research team also are translating the results of their research to help inform implementation of the first-ever National Ocean Policy in the United States. This policy recognizes the impact of our oceans on national security, energy development, food provision and our economy. Dr. Leslie’s work has been supported by the National Science Foundation.
