Barbara Riegel is a professor of nursing and director of the Biobehavioral Research Center at University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing. She is working to reduce hospital readmissions among older adults with heart failure — improving their quality of life and reducing a huge economic burden on our healthcare system. Heart failure is the primary reason for hospitalization in the Medicare population and, according to Dr. Riegel, if we can understand why this group has trouble with simple self-care tasks like eating a lowsalt diet and taking medications properly, we can identify ways to improve their health outcomes. A recent study led by Dr. Riegel identified sleep as a major contributing factor. Her research has been funded by the National Institutes of Health.
